Abstract
Most distribution feeders were planned around one-way power flow: from centralized generation, through substations and feeders, to customer loads. The rapid growth of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) — rooftop solar, customer-sited batteries in export mode, and community solar — is changing that model. When local generation exceeds local demand, the surplus flows upstream toward the substation. This is reverse power flow.
