Flammability Testing the Bolt
Today, we’re doing some flammability tests on the Bolt. We want the Bolt to meet the most strict UL standard for flammability, which is UL 94 v0, the vertical burn test. The materials we use in the Bolt housing already meet this standard, and they’ve been UL certified, but we want to test the Bolt as an entire assembly to make sure it’s safe.
In this test, you apply flame to the device under test for 10 seconds and then pull it away to see if the flame self-extinguishes. If it passes the test, the flame extinguishes very quickly. Then, as soon as that happens, you put it back in the flame for 10 more seconds and pull it away again, and you measure the total time that it burns after the flame and also the glow time at the end.
Performing the Test
So, we will apply flame to the Bolt for 10 seconds, and we are using a two-centimeter flame, and we are one centimeter away from the flame, as per the standard. We apply this for 10 seconds.
Pull it away, and we can see that it’s already extinguished, so we put it immediately back into the flame for another 10 seconds. And we pull it away and it’s already self-extinguished.
Test Results
We have no ignition on the cotton batting, and so the Bolt has easily passed the UL 94 v0 burn test, so it will be safe. If it’s in flame, it will not continue that flame.
And we can see the Bolt is actually still running. We don’t recommend this at home. It’ll violate your warranty. But the Bolt survived this test very easily.
